Puerto Rican community united full of pride. |
Maybe the way Puerto Ricans acted close-minded was something that led Americans to believe we were incapable of learning. They didn't realize that they were being stubborn and needed to understand our fragile position. The United Stated was a territory with power that could take away anything from us, and the island just needed understanding. The people that believed in us were the ones that kept teaching English. Those people that had hope in our welfare and not about what they could exploit from us.
The island now stands in a place were a vast majority of the population is well educated in comparison to that time were Cooper was teaching. The elementary technique of helping classmates was because of the will teachers had to see students bloom. No teacher had the intention to affect negatively the education in Puerto Rico. That is something were we could see again the fact that Puerto Ricans united against the unknown. Teachers, as students were merely natives from the island wanting to thrive. As a Puerto Rican, I see that beyond helping it was a way to strengthen the culture against the unknown.
The USA by imposing some of their views, have hurt the identity of PR.And with this I mean that in some situations in the mind of the puerto rican a clear national identity is missing completion
ReplyDeleteI don't think Puerto Ricans acted close-minded as you said. I think that everything in life should be by choice and not by imposition, when you said that "Americans to believe we were incapable of learning" we can turn the coin the other side and said: "Puerto Ricans believe that people from the United Stated is incapable of learning" because if you compare the number of Puerto Ricans that know English compared to the number of people from the states that know Spanish the first group is going to be significantly larger. When you said that we were in a fragile position i don't really understand why you would said that, during that time the whole world were in a precarious state were cultures were starting to evolve and we were part of it. We have our own language and culture and that's the one that we have to dominate, not even the people from the United States know proper English to perfection because if you look back in history the English was developed in England and there are many English people that don't even understand the people from the States and that's called dialect and it's part of the evolution of the cultures and civilizations.
ReplyDeleteNever been a fan of being linked with US but sadly we are too used to being helped that we don't see ourselves as an independent culture, only in some cases like in sports....
ReplyDeleteand we are always used to help other but what about today do you think it still exist?
